Save Money and Maintain Comfort With Reflective Insulation

With the increasing concerns about the costs of heating and cooling homes, many people are looking for ways to save money while staying comfortable at the same time. While getting new windows and doors will certainly help you save money, you're going to have to pay a lot of money out of pocket in order to begin reaping those savings.

Instead, you might consider reflective insulation, which is a way that you can begin enjoying lower energy bills immediately, without spending tens of thousands of dollars. In fact, the overall cost of radiant barrier, as it is sometimes referred to, is very reasonable, especially considering that you can install it yourself. While you can certainly hire someone to do the installation, you'll see a better overall savings if you take a weekend and do it yourself.

When installing radiant barrier, you want the side that looks like foil to be facing up because it needs to be vented. There are two places in an attic where you can put reflective insulation, including the attic floor and the roof rafters. When you place the sheets on the floor, lay them over the top of your existing fiberglass or cellulose insulation, but don't allow the shiny side to touch it. This application will help push heat back into your home when it tries to escape as it rises.

The second way you can use reflective insulation in your attic is to staple it to the roof rafters. Ideally, you'll want to leave three-fourths of an inch of space so air can circulate around the material. In this case, the reflective insulation actually stops hot air from entering your home through the roof when the rays of the sun penetrate the shingles. The ultimate goal is to prevent your attic from rising in temperature, which can affect the overall temperature in the rest of your home.
